#2: Is soy a health food or a health hazard?

So, is soy a health food or a health hazard?

Soy has been all the rage recently as a healthy alternative to protein. But, is it really a healthy alternative?

Let's take a look shall we.

Lots of people have been eating Soy (Known in the UK as soya or soya bean) believing it to be a healthy food, however, there may actually be problems associated with soy.

Some of the problems associated:–

*. Soy can disrupt endocrine function. The endocrine system controls hormones, so it can have an effect on fertility, menopause and other normal bodily functions that hormones control.

*. When soy is made into a protein the process used is highly toxic and carcinogenic, which can cause cancer.

*. Hi levels of phytic acid in soy can block some minerals from being absorbed.

*. Soy may affect the thyroid gland which could contribute to hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism or other thyroid disorders.

*. There is some research to suggest that soy can promote breast cancer.

*. Soy is high in aluminium, this is a toxin that can affect both the kidneys and the nervous system.

*. Soy Can effect the menstrual cycle in women and may have an effect on sperm quality in males and could be a problem during menopause in females.

*. Soy can affect how vitamins are used in the body.

*. Soy is high in omega 6, which is a polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA). These Omega 6s, can cause health problems ,(particularly inflammation).

The majority of soy is genetically modified (around 95%) and is grown in South and North America, where regulations might not be as stringent. For instance, they can be sprayed with insecticides and herbicides (roundup being one of them), that have been associated with adverse health effects.

Rainforests are being lost to soy bean farming particularly in Brazil, which is affecting the ecosystem and this can also have a knock-on affect in emitting greenhouse gases.

Watch out also if you have pets as, soy has been used in some pet foods. Also, soy is used to feed livestock.

So is soy safe in any circumstances? Well, let's look at the Asian population who do consume soy products. Firstly, the way they consume soy products are that these are fermented. They also only have small amounts for instance as condiments.

According to the Dr Kaala Daniel, author of "the whole soy story" there are thousands of studies to indicate that soy causes heart disease, thyroid dysfunction, cognitive decline, infertility, reproductive disorders, immune system disorders, digestive problems, kidney problems and cancer.

So in my opinion and from my point of view, I do not consume soy or soy products. I would recommend that if you're trying to get pregnant or breastfeeding you avoid soy products.
