#12: Does dieting make you fat?

So does dieting make you fat?

let's take a look shall we.

Nine out of ten dieters weigh more after they have finished their diet than before they started.

When you think of the word diet most people think of restricting calories and exercising more, however, nine out of ten weigh more than before they started.

The word diet actually means a particular way of eating.

Diets are doomed to failure, as it is the body's survival mechanism kicking in.

The average British diet consists of 50% fat. This fat comes from junk, processed and packaged foods.

By our late 20s we lose approximately half a pound of muscle every year. So every decade we lose 5 pounds of muscle.

Muscle burns fat, so less muscle mass means we burn less calories.

If you do nothing, for example, no exercise or don't modify your diet in some way, every 10 years you will gain weight.

Fat burning takes place in side the mitochondria (which is inside our cells).

Mitochondria are the powerhouse of the cell where energy is burned.

The more mitochondria you have in your muscles the more fat you burn.

So the question is how do you get more mitochondria?

More on that subject next week, in the meantime make sure you combine resistance training with cardio work out.
