#14: Are fats good for you?

So are fats good for you or are they even healthy for you?

Lets take a look shall we.

Healthy fats are extremely important for brain health.

Your brain is comprised of 60% fat so it is extremely important for you to consume essential fatty acids (EFA) in your diet.

Essential fatty acids cannot be made by the body and are therefore essential to have them.

You must take them in from your diet in order to supply the body with the correct ratio of these essential fatty acids.

There are different types of essential fatty acids and three important ones are omega 3s, omega 6s and omega 9s.

You may have heard fats often referred to as saturated, Monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats.

Saturated fats are solid at room temperature and are very stable and therefore safe.

Monounsaturated fats are liquid at room temperature.

Polyunsaturated are liquid in the fridge.

Every cell in your body has a protective membrane around them which is comprised of fat.

The fat around your cells actually makes them waterproof.

Saturated fat actually enhances the immune system and suppresses inflammation the same cannot be said for trans fats as they do the complete opposite and suppress the immune system and encourage inflammation.

Saturated fats are actually needed to breakdown alcohol, drugs and help detox organs such as your heart, lungs and kidneys and your immune system.

A short chain fatty acid called Butyrate, which is an anti-inflammatory is your colon's preferred choice of fuel.

Butyrate protects the intestines by producing good gut bacteria.

Good bacteria in the gut can help keep the bad bacteria from getting out of balance. This helps your metabolism, and helps control weight. It also helps lower cholesterol and lowers triglyceride levels.

So a healthy gut is very important for weight loss along with healthy fats.
