#27: What is Foam Rolling and is it any good for you?

What is a foam rolling?

Foam rolling can help to break down scar tissue and adhesions by bringing in fresh blood and nutrients to the tissues. This can also help to reduce pain and improve flexibility of the muscle and range of motion of the joint.

As foam rolling can help with stretching and flexibility, it will also help with stiff muscles by enabling the muscles to become more supple.

If you find a particular area is painful when you're rolling the foam roller over that area, it normally indicates that there is some kind of adhesion or scar tissue that needs to be broken up.

Foam Rollers come in many different shapes, sizes and materials. The one pictured above is a solid massage foam roller. This one is extra thick and solid so you are able to get a very deep tissue muscle massage.

You can now get vibrating foam rollers, although these are a lot more expensive, ranging from £35 to £120.00.

One of my favourite ways to use the foam roller is to do wall squats. You lean up against a wall and squat up-and-down. (Like I am doing in the above picture). Not only does this get you in the perfect position to squat but also gives you a free back massage why performing it. A win-win situation.

until next time this is,
